Steven’s Story

Advocacy and Activism

Steven Lee was born and raised in Brampton with his mother, father, and sister. Steven first became involved in Brampton politics as a teenager, volunteering on local campaigns in the 2006 federal election motivated by a sense of fairness and desire for accountability in politics.

After graduating university, Steven worked as a tutor and also became active in local politics once more in Brampton. During this time he became a passionate advocate for changes in Brampton to make the city better for residents.

During the 2015 federal election Steven served as a volunteer and organizer for one of the Brampton campaigns. In 2022 Steven ran for Brampton city council to give voters a real alternative and present new policies to make Brampton better. After the election, Steven became a citizen member of Brampton’s Active Transportation Advisory Committee to provide feedback to city staff on pedestrian, cycling programs and infrastructure and related issues and volunteer for community events.

He now looks to join the Brampton Council and help his hometown thrive and address the challenges it faces with a fresh perspective.

Steven currently lives with Brampton’s Ward 1.

Education and Work

Steven has a passion for education and has worked for much of his life in education and training. After graduating high school in Brampton, Steven attended Brock University in St. Catharines, Ontario and earned a Bachelor of Arts in History, a Bachelor of Education (Intermediate/Senior), and a Master of Arts in History. During his tenure at Brock, Steven studies focused on Canadian and world history and human geography. He worked for Brock University as a research assistant and a teaching assistant. For his Master’s program completed a major research paper on the history of Canada’s North and Indigenous peoples. While at university and after graduating, Steven worked as a tutor for a private tutoring company in Brampton, helping high school and middle school students build up their skills and confidence.

From 2013-2015 Steven moved to Fort Smith, Northwest Territories to take a job as a school board clerk and communications specialist for the South Slave Divisional Education Council. In this role, he collaborated with school trustees and community groups and helped local representatives resist cuts to public education. He also collaborated with board staff and indigenous community members to help create and promote a indigenous language materials and promote literacy initiatives.

After returning to Brampton, Steven worked for a Brampton manufacturing company as an analyst and trainer until 2024.

Currently, Steven works as a coordinator and estimator for an electrical engineering company.
